Kitchen remodel ideas

Kitchen diagram

Step 1: General Kitchen design

Before starting on a kitchen remodel, it's important to list your goals with a new kitchen.  Are you focused on updating?  Are you trying to be more organized?  Are you looking for more counterspace? Some suggestions:

Kitchen islands are always a good option.  They provide open centrally located counterspace and more cabinet storage

Hidden garbage bins are awesome.  They will make your kitchen look cleaner and be more organized

Good lighting is a must.  Good lighting will make your kitchen more functional

A nice backsplash is decorative and it it makes your walls easier to clean.

A small appliance cabinet on your countertop will make your kitchen look less cluttered

Step 2: Plans

At this stage of the kitchen remodel, there is not always a need to call a designer to create plans.  Get a diagram together.  We recommend using a simple program like Microsoft word to draw up a plan.  A hand drawn sketch is fine too.  Include the essential elements in the kitchen like cabinet locations, appliance locations and countertops

Kitchen cabinets

Step 3: Choose your cabinets

Explore the type of cabinets you want in your new kitchen.  There are 3 basic type of cabinets from least expensive to most expensive; stock, semi-custom, custom.

Stock Cabinets

Stock cabinets are installation ready premade in a standard size and style. Stock cabinets are made to fit standard spaces as stand-alone units.

Advantage: quick order and install, less pricey

Disadvantage:  Stock cabinets can have a plain look

Semi Custom Cabinets

The boxes of semi custom cabinets are built in place but the doors are ordered to fit a custom size.

Advantage: fairly quick install, medium priced

Disadvantage:  Stock cabinets can have a plain look

Custom Cabinets

Custom cabinets boxes and cabinet doors are hand built in place.

Advantage: custom look

Disadvantage:  long install time & pricey

Step 6: Appliances

Appliances are important for the function of a kitchen,  Good quality appliances will effect the way your home is seen if you decide to sell.  Bosch and Kitchen Aide are good reliable brands but a little pricey.  Maytag and Whirlpool are good brands and more affordable.
